It’s like “soup of the moment” at your favorite restaurant. These are the things that I’m doing right now.

Learning

Learning how to trust AI outputs, especially when I’m coding. At the moment, I trust Claude the most of the models I’ve tried. I find it to make the fewest mistakes the best decisions when I don’t specify all the details. But sometimes it is wrong and I’m experimenting to find what delivers the best responses.

Reading

Reading the book Mitigating Bias in Machine Learning edited by Carlotta A. Berry and Brandeis Hill Marshall. Chapter 10 (Applying the Wells-DuBois Protocol for Achieving Systemic Equity in Socioecological Systems) is giving me practice thinking critically about potential harms of machine learning systems.

Enjoying

Enjoying the Merlin Bird ID app from Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The app lets you identify birds you see or hear. It then feeds your data to eBird, which is an open science project supporting birding research, conservation, and education. So it’s a great example of data engineering + citizen science + open science.

This is a now page, inspired by Derek Sivers. It’s a snapshot of what I’m focused on at this point in my life.

I learned about “now page” from the Substack writings of Ash Ambirge.
